What are Deanships in Astrology?
When it appears to move around the Earth, the circle made by the Sun forms 360º. This wheel is divided into 12 segments, which correspond to the twelve signs of the Zodiac.
Each sign occupies a segment of 30º, which, in turn, is divided into three deans of 10º each. Each of these sections is ruled by a different planet.
The Deans on the Zodiac Wheel and the Astral Chart
As the Sun travels on the elliptical throughout the year, it travels the wheel of the Zodiac (counterclockwise), crossing each of the twelve signs. The cycle begins with the vernal equinox (approximately March 21), ushering in a new astrological year.
The circle that forms the Zodiac measures 360º and is divided into 12 parts, which correspond to the twelve signs. Each of these portions is approximately 30º (the twelve parts do not have precisely this measurement, but it has been agreed on this way since ancient times to facilitate the calculations).
The 30 degrees of each sign are divided, in turn, into three parts, forming the decans, which results in parts of 10 - the prefix "deca" means 10. Since each sign lasts approximately 30 days, each decanate covers ten days (approximately).
Thus, in the birth chart, the 360º is divided into 36 10º segments, and each segment corresponds to a ruling planet. In the letter, the analysis of the decans allows us to understand in what stage of life the energies of the planets tend to express themselves better (at the beginning, mid-life, or at the end of life).

The definition of the ruling planets of the third decans born between 20º and 29.59º follows the same logic. In the same example, Sagittarius is Leo's fire element sign. So, the ruling planet of Sagittarius (Jupiter) is the planet that rules the third decan of Aries.
